What is an NFer?

NFer    [ en-eff-er ]

noun

  1. a person who falls under the Intuition (N) and Feeling (F) categories of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator assessment
  2. a rare individual found among only 15% of the general population
  3. an empathetic, imaginative, idealistic person who leads with their heart and craves harmony and purpose in a world that’s often chaotic and discouraging

“NFer” is a name we came up with to describe the type of person we like working with best. In fact, it’s a word that also describes ourselves. Most of us at Inspire Coaching are NFers, too.

In the simplest sense, an NFer is someone who falls under the Intuition (N) and Feeling (F) categories of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, a popular personality assessment tool. This means they prefer to use their intuition rather than their senses when interpreting the world around them, and they focus on their feelings rather than logic when deciding how to act.

This is far from all there is to being an NFer, though.

Relationship-
Oriented

NFers are “people” people, exhibiting high levels of empathy, warmth, and altruism. Emotionally self-aware and perceptive, they nurture others, prioritize harmony, consistently seek what's best for everyone, and feel deeply troubled when others are discontent.

These qualities make NFers loyal and loving friends, relatives, and romantic partners. However, they can also lead NFers to over-invest themselves in interpersonal relationships, sometimes caring for others at the expense of their own well-being. And their open-hearted nature also makes them acutely sensitive to criticism and easily hurt by others who do not reciprocate their good intentions.

Idealistic &
Visionary

NFers like to build castles in the sky and shoot for the stars. They are champions of human potential, approaching every situation with hope and idealism. They rely on intuition and faith when making decisions, making them natural leaders who can inspire others with their vision and confidence.

But NFers struggle when the foundations of their dreams start to crumble. Their idealistic nature can quickly give way to disillusionment when confronted with disappointment and failure. They tend to get stuck in the realm of ideas and have difficulty compromising their ideals, which can lead to errors in judgment when problems arise back down on Earth.

Purpose-driven &
Expressive

NFers are driven by a profound yearning for personal meaning and purpose. They are not happy unless they are following their heart. They tend to be highly imaginative and creative, leveraging these talents to express themselves to the world and work toward their version of a greater good.

These characteristics make NFers extraordinarily passionate people, but they can become intensely frustrated when their passions have no outlet. As a result, NFers can quickly become disengaged and despondent when they feel their lives lack meaning. And because their bar for meaning is so high, they may struggle in many traditional professions and work environments.
